All of us in the company have in common that we see the climate changing. Humans have different ways of coping with this. Many of us deny it. Some just try not to think about it. Some despair and have given up hope. The Crude Oil Mechanicals are just ordinary people who have decided we want to face it full on, bear witness to it, while having fun and making people laugh.
Though the causes of climate change are complex, at the moment the big oil companies alone can destroy our climate by continuing to find and exploit new oilfields. The oil and gas that would be burnt from these would be enough to make sure that the Earth will heat up beyond any manageable level. That is why many of our plays target the big oil companies, and the financiers and insurers who enable them.
In particular, campaigners have recently targeted big insurance companies, because if they stopped insuring new oil exploration, the oil companies wouldn’t be able to do it. Insurance companies are having their business model threatened by the unpredictability of climate change, caused by the very projects they have insured.
