The Crude Oil Mechanicals

Our Creative Team

We have many creative people in The Crude Oil Mechanicals over the years. As well as actors and musicians, talented creatives have supported us with making props, head-dresses, costumes and giant puppets. We have also appreciated the support from our XR Lewes community. Local organisations have supported us with free rehearsal space. Below are some of our present number.

Drik

Dirk

I'm Dirk, I'm a composer and session musician and have been a climate activist since my first arrest at Kingsnorth in 2008. I'm also a Morris dancer and Town Councillor in that order, volunteer at the local Climate Hub and make my own oatcakes, houmous and chermoula sauce.

Jo

I’m Jo. I originally trained as a silversmith and jeweller before backpacking round the world in the 80’s. I used to teach EFL in Japan, Ramsgate and Brighton, and was chair of the South Downs Group of Freedom From Torture. I now write, and tread the streets as an activist against climate change.

hugh

Hugh

Hi, I’m Hugh. Most important to me are my friends, my family and my grand-kids, and ensuring there’s a future for them. I love being creative, I like using reclaimed materials to make miniatures, wood carving and sculptures, as well as painting and drawing. Making art in the street or in the landscape is special to me. I’m always looking for new ways of making things. For my living I’m a gardener. I qualified as an arborist, and I just love trees.

Noa

I’m Noa. I’m a Soprano singer based in East Sussex, concerned about the climate and the future of our planet. I’ve started Music Box Wealden, a project that contributes to community and environmentally friendly classical music making.

Dolmen

I’m Dolmen, I act, and I also write scripts and direct our shows. In my other life, I am a Dramatherapist, and I worked for the NHS for over 30 years, mainly with children and families. I love walking in the beautiful Sussex countryside with my dog.

Ruth

Ruth

I'm Ruth; I'm currently a writer, poet and illustrator having previously been, in no particular order, a photographer, bellydancer, jeweller, property developer, farm worker and life model. I love kayaking, walking and performing in a folk choir.

John

John

I’m John. I’ve had a lot of fun playing the baddies in our various productions, and have enjoyed embracing my dark side!I I’m a keen gardener, allotment holder and builder of compost heaps. I volunteer with abandofbrothers, a charity supporting young men. And I’m a proud husband, father and grandfather. I’m currently on sabbatical from the Crudes.

Moya

Hi, I’m Moya. I enjoy creating props and costumes for the Crudes, a wonderful creative challenge. I currently work on a community horticultural project growing fruit and vegetables, as well as other local events. My past roles include community development, supporting refugees and homeless families, and therapeutic gardening in primary schools in Hackney. I also enjoy walking, traveling, building projects, and time with my grandchildren.

Richard

Richard

I’m Richard. I discovered the part of myself that likes to perform later in life. Outside of The Crudes, and local community engagement, I work for myself, mostly making it up as I go along and just trying to do the best I can.

Serena

I’m Serena. I made TV ads for 30 years but when i learned the truth about climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, i quit promoting consumerism and now make short films about the environment. I love my activist community and my 2 dogs!
